To pay with Alipay at Aldi Süd, the cashier activates the EC terminal and the customer can pay for the purchase using a QR code via the Alipay app on their smartphone. Prerequisite for use is an Alipay account, which can be created with a Chinese bank account or an international bank card.
The new payment option is currently aimed primarily at Chinese tourists and Chinese living in Germany. With more than a billion users, Alipay is the leading payment platform in China. With the introduction of the new payment option, Aldi Süd is currently offering 11 payment methods at the POS, including the mobile payment services from Apple Pay, Google Pay and Sodexo Benefits Pass.
